State Tax Information

Health Savings Accounts withdrawals for eligible health expenses are tax-free at the federal level. Each state establishes their own guidelines regarding the tax treatment of HSA withdrawals. Check with your tax professional to find out if HSA withdrawals are considered taxable income in your state.

The following states follow the tax treatment established by the federal government:

 Arizona  Arkansas  Colorado  Connecticut
 Delaware  Georgia  Hawaii  Idaho
 Illinois  Iowa  Indiana  Kansas
 Kentucky  Louisiana  Maryland  Massachusetts
 Missouri  Michigan  Minnesota  Mississippi
 Montana  Nebraska  Nevada  New Mexico
 North Carolina  North Dakota  Ohio  Oklahoma
 New York  Oregon  Rhode Island  South Carolina
 Utah  Vermont  Virginia  West Virginia

 The following states are not subject to state income tax:

Alaska Florida New Hampshire South Dakota
Tennessee Texas Washington Wyoming

 The following states do not provide tax benefits for HSAs at the state level:

Alabama California Maine New Jersey
Pennsylvania Wisconsin
